Week 3 NFL Betting Odds: Spreads & Over/Under Lines

Week 2 in the NFL was a great week for sportsbooks with favorites going just 5-10 against the spread. This week also saw its second tie of the year with an insane game between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers in was probably the most exciting game of the season to date. Two ties already the most in a single season in the NFL since the new overtime rules were put into effect and the most since 1997 when there were also two ties. You have to think the league will be reevaluating these rules again, as games ending in ties don’t typically sit well with fans.

Most of the favorites did win outright – they went 8-6-1 straight up, but there were several of games that easily could have gone the other way. The Browns missed an extra point to beat the Saints, who eventually won in overtime and the Broncos needed a last-second field goal to avoid being upset at home by the Raiders.

The biggest upset of the week was of the Redskins, who lost 21-9 at home against the Colts, who entered the game as 5.5-point underdogs.  Not far behind, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost by 5 at home as 5-point favorites to the Chiefs, who have so far this season looked like a real contender in the AFC.

Week 3 NFL Vegas Game Lines: Point Spreads & Betting Totals

This week’s NFL slate features a fair share of notable matchups. The Vikings have opened up as 16.5 point favorites against the hapless Bills, a spread you don’t see very often in this league. In fact, there have been just six other games over the last three seasons with a spread of 16 or more points – and four of the six were New England Patriots home games (twice against the Jets, once against the Dolphins, and once against the Texans). It’s also worth noting that the favorite covered the huge spread in all six games and covered by an average of 8 points.

For those thinking about the moneyline on either side of this game, the favorite has gone 70-3 with spreads of 16 or more in the NFL since 1989, a win rate of 96%. Current moneyline odds are about -2000 on the Vikings and +1100 on the Bills. Those implied odds are 95.2% for the Vikings and 8.3% for the Bills. As crazy at it sounds, taking the Vikings -2000 on the moneyline is a value bet! You should be aware though, that 2 of the 3 times a 16+ point favorite won outright, it was at the hands of the Buffalo Bills (both times in 1992, over the Colts and Jets).

For anyone wondering, the biggest NFL spread on record  came in the 2013 season with the Denver Broncos favored by 26 points over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Denver won 35-19 and failed to cover the spread by 10 points.

We will also be looking forward to watching what the Eagles can do with Carson Wentz getting his first start of the season, Philly coming off of a disappointing loss to the Bucs last week. The Eagles are currently 6-point favorites at home over the Colts.
