Week 16 NFL Odds: Points Spreads & Game Previews

It was another wild week in the NFL, kicking off with a great game between two of the top teams in the AFC. The Chargers mounted an improbable comeback to upset the Chiefs in Kansas City on Thursday Night Football. This week also marked the start of Saturday NFL games this season. Both games saw the underdog cover the spread (or push, depending on the line you got on the Jets), but Browns ended up winning outright in Denver, keeping their extremely slim chances to make the playoffs alive.

Sunday marked one of the biggest “under” days in the NFL in recent memory with only three of the twelve games going over the total (two totals pushed on the closing line, but may have gone either way for you depending on the line of course). This past Sunday also saw home teams representing well with a 9-3 record straight up and a 7-4-1 mark against the spread.

All of those home teams winning meant there were not many upsets, that is, until Sunday night football with the struggling 6-7 Philadelphia Eagles pulling off a shocking 30-23 road victory over the then 11-2 Rams.

Then, on Monday Night Football, the Saints barely escaped upset against the Carolina Panthers, but secured a 12-9 win to give them the best record in the NFL at 12-2.  Now let’s have a look at the upcoming week.

Week 16 NFL Lines: Betting Advice & Picks Against the Spread

Playoff implications abound this week with several teams in a win-or-be-eliminated scenario. Many teams are not in control of their own destiny and will need some help to make the postseason. As of now, the Chiefs, Chargers, Bears, Saints, and Rams have all clinched a playoff berth, while the Bills, Jets, Bengals, Jags, Broncos, Raiders, Giants, Packers, Lions, Falcons, Bucs, 49ers, and Cardinals have officially been eliminated.  That leaves 14 teams competing for the remaining 9 playoff spots.

From a betting perspective, this puts motivation into play. Will a team like the Bills show up to try to spoil the Patriots playoff hopes. New England only needs to win one of their remaining two games make the playoffs, but winning out would likely grant them a first round bye. Since Brady’s first full season with the Pats, they’ve completely dominated Buffalo, owning a 31-4 record against them, including a 22-11-2 (66.7%) mark against the spread. They’ve never lost to the Bills as double-digit favorites during this stretch (8-0) and have covered the spread more often than not (5-3) in these scenarios. This alone isn’t reason enough to take New England this week, but it should give you some context to the matchup.

The other thing to consider is teams like the Saints, Rams, and Bears, who have all clinched division titles, are still fighting for a first round bye and/or homefield advantage in the playoffs. While home field doesn’t guarantee victory, since 1989 home teams in the NFL playoffs are 109-61 (64.1%) – compared to a 58.1% win rate in the regular season – so it does significantly improve the probability of moving on to the next round.

Below you’ll find all of the lines for this week’s games as of the date of posting. You’ll also find a link to a betting preview on every matchup as they become available.
