Looking at the results from last week in the NFL, there were not many surprises. The Patriots, now 7-0, continued to look like the best team in the league with a dominant performance over the Jets on Monday Night Football. The 49ers also remained unbeaten (7-0) with an admittedly less impressive 9-0 win over the Redskins. Both the Bengals and Dolphins, the only two teams entering the week without a win this season, lost again.
Maybe the biggest news in the league came from the Thursday Night game between the Chiefs and Broncos. Kansas City won 30-6, but lost Patrick Mahomes to a knee injury. It doesn’t sound serious, but Mahomes will miss at least a couple of weeks.
Here’s a look at the games for the upcoming week.
From a pure matchups perspective, this is probably one of the weakest weeks of the NFL season. There are a lot of big spreads and not many good matchups. It will be interesting to see how the Chiefs play at home against the Packers with Mahomes out, but the game would have offered a lot more excitement with one of the best young players in the league featured on Sunday Night Football.
The good news is that when you are betting on the games, the matchups don’t really matter, only the odds do! There are four teams favored by 13 or more points this week. Most amateur bettors are quick to take double-digit underdogs in the NFL because the perception is that most NFL games are close. Looking back since 2002, this hasn’t been the case. Favorites of 13 or more points are actually 105-97-3 (52%) against the spread in that time span. While not blindly profitable, it should make you think twice before taking the double-digit dog in the NFL based purely on the line.
