Week 14 of the NFL season is over and gone, but it will leave a lasting impression. The end of the Patriots/Dolphins game is one of the most improbable finishes in NFL history. This play didn’t end up factoring into the spread, but if you had the Dolphins on the money line, that was a fun way to win!
Entering the week, only the Rams had clinched their division, as well as a playoff spot. After the dust settled in Week 14, the Saints did the same, while the Chiefs secured at least a Wild Card berth in the post season. The list of teams eliminated from playoff contention also continues to grow. The Bills, Jags, Jets, Raiders, Cardinals, and 49ers all now know they will be sitting at home once the regular season concludes. Let’s look at what we have in store this week.
We start on Thursday with one of the best matchups of the week as the 10-3 Chargers visit the 11-2 Chiefs. The Chiefs are already in the playoffs and have been in control of the division with a perfect 4-0 record, however, at 2-2 in the division, there is still an outside chance the Chargers could make a *ahem* charge to the top of the standings. Even if LAC doesn’t end up winning the AFC West, this game is still super important to their playoff hopes. They hold a comfortable lead in the Wild Card standings as of now, but a loss here puts them in a tough spot. They still have the Ravens (another team fighting for a playoff spot) and the Broncos left on the schedule. None of their remaining games are easy wins.
There’s also NFL on Saturday this week with a double-header of the Texans/Jets, followed by the Browns/Broncos. These matchups don’t have much intrigue in terms of this year’s playoff picture, but I imagine the Texans will be one of the most heavily bet teams this week given they are only 6 point favorites against the 4-9 Jets.
Sunday’s games feature some classic matchups including the Packers at Bears and Patriots at Steelers. The Bears are in the driver’s seat in the NFC North, but you can never really count Rodgers and the Packers out of a game. The Bears are currently listed as and ambiguous 5-point favorite. The Steelers/Patriots spread is set at a pick ’em. New England is in a strong position to make the playoffs, but last week’s surprising loss to the Dolphins still leaves them vulnerable to missing out on the postseason. The Steelers find themselves in a precarious situation as well. They currently lead the AFC North, but not by much. Neither team can really afford a loss here.
This week will be capped off by an NFC South showdown between the Saints and Panthers. These teams always seem to bring out the best in each other. The Panthers are on the outside looking in at the Wild Card, while the Saints have already clinched the division and a playoff bid. It should be interesting to see if that difference in motivation has any impact on the game. New Orleans is still trying to secure that coveted home field advantage throughout the playoffs, so I don’t expect them to come out flat.
