Week 17 NFL Odds: Point Spreads, Totals & Predictions

Avatar

The second-to-last week in the NFL regular season was a unique one from a betting perspective. Home teams went 9-7 straight up this past week, but went just 2-12-2 against the spread. It was the worst ATS winning percentage for home teams in the NFL since Week 16 in 1993 when home teams also went 2-12 against the number.

We’ve also seen the playoff picture become more solidified with nine teams now guaranteed a playoff spot.

NFC

AFC

As you can see, plenty of teams are now locked into playoff spots, but most of the AFC division titles are still up for grabs and home field advantage and first-round byes are yet to be decided.

This produces some interesting motivational factors for teams with something to play for, but keep in mind that this reason alone is by no means a reason to bet on or against a team as it will already be accounted for in the spread. If anything, teams that “must win” are likely overvalued in these scenarios, so you will want to avoid betting on them blindly this week. The opposite goes for teams with nothing to play for, they may be undervalued in these situations because the general betting public sees an edge here that doesn’t really exist.

NFL Week 17 Betting Lines & Free Picks Against the Spread

There are a few teams that can vastly improve their playoff odds by getting home field advantage and/or a first-round bye this week. Keep in mind that these teams only need to win outright, they don’t need to cover the spread. It is perfectly fine to use this motivation to help you handicap games, just don’t take it as the one thing that is going to guarantee that team covers the spread.

The Chiefs are 13.5 point favorites over the Raiders this week. Oakland holds three first round picks in next year’s draft, but they are unlikely to improve on their fourth overall pick with a loss. Kansas City can clinch the division and home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win, but don’t expect the Raiders to roll over in this divisional rivalry. They’d love to play spoilers here and they have been playing much better football of late.

We also find the Patriots in a similar situation as 13.5-point favorites against the NY Jets. New England just needs to win to clinch a first-round bye, and to have any chance at home field throughout the playoffs.

Both the Texans and Ravens can clinch their divisions (and the first-round bye that comes with it) with a win this week, while the Titans and Colts, who play each other, find themselves in a scenario where the winner makes the playoffs and the loser stays home.
