Philadelphia has a commanding 46-28-3 advantage in the series. The Eagles won six of the last nine matchups. The Steelers took the last meeting, winning 16-14 at home on October 7, 2012.

Early Lean on Steelers -3.5

Pittsburgh won a bitter rivalry game with a division foe last week. The Steelers are putting up 405.5 yards of offense and 31 points per game. Pittsburgh hasn’t missed a beat while LeVeon Bell serves his three game suspension. DeAngelo Williams has a league leading 237 yards on the ground. The Steelers average 135.5 yards per game and 4.1 yards per carry on the ground. Ben Roethlisberger has a league leading six touchdown passes. He’s completed 62.2 percent of his throws though he does have three picks. Philadelphia’s defense has given up just 286 yards per game and is 2nd in the league by allowing 12 points a game. Some of that is chalked up to the competition: beating Cleveland and Chicago doesn’t move the needle much. Pittsburgh has wins over Washington and Cincinnati: each won a division crown last season.

Philadelphia is 2-0 with a rookie under center but Wentz is moving up to the big leagues this week. Beating the Browns and Bears was a good way for the second overall pick to get his feet wet. The Steelers defense allows just 50.5 rushing yards per game and 3.4 yards per carry. Philadelphia puts up 116.5 rushing yards a game but averages 3.5 yards per attempt. Wentz hasn’t thrown a pick yet. While the Steelers are giving up 347.5 yards per game through the air, a lot of the yards came in garbage time with Pittsburgh holding a big lead. Opposing quarterbacks have a 79.2 QB rating against the Steelers. The red zone is a test for the Eagles: they convert 50 percent of their trips there into TDs. Pittsburgh has allowed just one red zone TD in seven trips.

Bart Scott called Wentz “fool’s gold” because “he’s only played the JV” so far in his career. This is a major test for the rookie. It’s not an easy one. The Steelers have a hard hitting, aggressive defense but they have a prolific offensive attack. Wentz can’t afford many three and outs. The Eagles can’t turn the ball over and give the Steelers a short field to work with either. Philadelphia has to keep the game close to allow Wentz to make plays. The Steelers are the deeper, more talented and more experienced team. Roethlisberger and Pittsburgh get the better of their cross-state rival here. The Steelers are 2-0-2 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game. Pittsburgh is also 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games in September and 3-0-2 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Philadelphia is 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 home games vs. a team with a winning road record and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games when playing on Sunday following a Monday night game.
