Titans Lions Odds

An inter-conference matchup takes place in the Motor City in week 2 of the NFL campaign. The Tennessee Titans travel to battle the Detroit Lions Sunday afternoon. Kickoff from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan is set for 1:00 pm ET. Regional television coverage in the game is provided by CBS. The current line has the Lions favored by 6 points with the over/under set at 47.5 points in this contest.

Tennessee went flat in the second half against a different NFC North franchise, losing 25-16 at home to the Vikings last week. Detroit battled in a back and forth contest before knocking off the Colts 39-35 on the road last week. This is the 12th all-time meeting between the franchises. The Titans own an 8-3 advantage in the series. Tennessee has wins in the last four meetings between the teams. That includes a 44-41 overtime win in the last meeting on September 23, 2012.

Early Lean on the Lions -6

Tennessee played terrific football last week for 30 minutes. Unfortunately for the Titans, football is a 60 minute game. Tennessee held a 10-0 advantage at the half but gave up 25 unanswered points. The Titans didn’t get on the board again until the final minute of the game. By then, it was too little, too late for Tennessee’s chances. The Titans turned the ball over three times while failing to generate a takeaway. The turnovers led directly to 14 points for Minnesota. The game could have been worse had the Vikings not missed two field goals. Marcus Mariota was 25 of 41 passing for 271 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. DeMarco Murray ran 13 times for 42 yards while adding five catches for 35 yards and two scores in his team debut. Rookie receiver Tajae Sharpe impressed with a team leading seven receptions totaling 76 yards.

Detroit picked up the win by giving away and then recapturing the lead in the last minute of the contest. The Lions blew a 34-28 lead on Jack Doyle’s second touchdown reception of the game with 37 seconds to play. Trailing 35-34, Matthew Stafford led the Lions on a five play, 50 yard drive to set up Matt Prater for a field goal attempt. He missed an extra point earlier but drilled a 43 yard field goal with four seconds to play that gave Detroit a 37-35 advantage. The Lions added a safety on the following kickoff as time expired.

Stafford was 31 of 39 passing for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Ameer Abdullah led the Lions with 12 carries for 63 yards. Theo Riddick chipped in 45 rushing yards and a score while catching five passes for 63 yards and another score. Golden Tate led the team with seven catches for 41 yards. Abdullah (57 yards) and Eric Ebron (46 yards) each had five catches and a touchdown. The Lions need to tighten up defensively after being outgained 450-448 in the contest. Neither team forced a turnover in the game.

The biggest acquisition for the Lions in the last couple of seasons wasn’t a free agent signing on the field. It was the hiring of Jim Bob Cooter as the team’s offensive coordinator. The Lions are 7-2 since he was promoted to the job. It was almost as if the offense flipped a switch when Cooter took over. Tennessee isn’t a good offensive team as they run a methodical game plan. The Titans can’t come back if they go down multiple scores. Detroit cruises to the win to improve to 2-0 on the year with a double digit triumph. Detroit is 4-0 ATS in their last four overall, 5-1 ATS in their last six after a straight up win and 5-1 ATS in their last six on fieldturf. Tennessee is 1-7 ATS in their last eight on fieldturf, 0-5-1 ATS in their last six after an ATS loss and 0-4 ATS in their last four on the road. The Titans are also 5-21-3 ATS in their last 29 after a straight up loss.
