With an 0-5 team you would expect a lot of 0-16 talk, but for some reason the Cali sports press isn’t quite willing to go there yet on the San Francisco 49ers.
However, there’s no question coaches are already looking to the future. Veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman was released on Thursday night, making way for younger players to get more reps. On one hand, the ‘9ers have faced a brutal schedule – their first 2 losses were to the Panthers and the Seahawks. But in the last 3 weeks, they’ve lost winnable games over the Rams, Cardinals and Colts, each by a field goal or less.
Washington has a few injuries and issues of their own to deal with. But the ‘Skins are at a hopeful 2-2 and QB Kirk Cousins is having a fine season with 7 touchdown passes and only 1 interception thrown.
Bookies installed the Redskins as a single-digit favorite at home. The action favors Washington and has driven the point spread above 10.
Who: San Francisco 49ers at Washington Redskins
When: Sunday, October 15th, 1 PM EST
Where: FedExField, Landover, MD
Lines: San Fran (+11) at Washington (-11) / O/U Total: (46.5)
The Redskins have been running the ball well, helping protect Kirk Cousins – who doesn’t always get rid of the ball as soon as necessary. The star QB has taken 7 sacks on the year and does not have a dominant WR to throw to – versatile backfield-mate Chris Thompson is the team’s leading receiver with 235 yards.
That’s probably why the D.C. offense has fallen flat against tough competition, losing to the Eagles and the Chiefs in closely-contested battles. But the match-up with the 49ers still seems like a potential cupcake at home. Is there anything the winless visitors do that could bother the ‘Skins in both halves?
San Fran quarterback Brian Hoyer has been okay, but inaccurate at times. Pierre Garcon, however, is a more explosive player than anyone on the outside for Washington. And Carlos Hyde will be the best running back on the field at FedEx.
Take the over. The 49’ers have been scoring points against decent defenses, and the near-40 they put up against Los Angeles was not a fluke. The Redskins also have the potential to get hot on offense Sunday, as the home environment will help their OL protect the pocket. But if that happens, it will drive the point total up further.
