Arkansas State Utah State Odds

The Arkansas State Red Wolves travel on the road seeking their first win of the season. They travel to face the Utah State Aggies Friday night. The game kicks off from Romney Stadium in Logan, Utah at 9 pm ET. Television coverage for the contest is provided by the CBS Sports Network. The current odds for the game have Utah State as a 9.5 point favorite with the over/under set at 57.5 points in this contest.

Arkansas State fell to 0-2 on the year after a 51-14 trouncing on the road at Auburn last week. Utah State took a 45-7 beating on the road at the hands of USC last Saturday. The two schools met for the seventh time in history. Each program has three victories in the series with Arkansas State taking the last two. That includes a 21-14 win at home in the last meeting between the schools back in 2014.

Early Lean on Utah State -9.5

Arkansas State hung in for about 12 minutes in their road trip to Auburn. After that, the wheels fell off: the Red Wolves were outscored 44-7 over the last 48 minutes. Arkansas State tied the game at seven on a Chad Voytik one yard scoring run with 4:28 to play in the opening quarter. The game remained tied for all of 1:49: Auburn scored a touchdown. That opened the floodgates to 34 unanswered Auburn points. The Red Wolves gave up a blistering 706 yards of offense and allowed 32 first downs in the game. Arkansas State was overmatched for the second straight week.

The Red Wolves struggle offensively as they are averaging a total of 296 yards of offense this season. Arkansas State is 91st in passing offense with 192 yards per game and 112th in rushing with 104 yards per contest. The Red Wolves are third worst in the FBS in scoring offense by averaging 12 points a game. Voytik has hit 26 of 45 passes for 339 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He has 50 rushing yards and two scores, ranking second on the team. Warren Wand leads the team in rushing with 114 yards on 28 carries. In the passing game, Christian Booker leads the team with nine catches totaling 105 yards. Blake Mack (five grabs, team high 136 yards) and Cameron Echols-Luper (six catches, 52 yards) are the only other players with more than three catches for the Red Wolves.

Utah State took a beating in their road clash against an angry USC team. Getting the Trojans one week after a 52-6 trouncing by #1 Alabama was bad timing for the Aggies. Utah State was down 21-0 at the half and 31-0 in the third quarter before getting on the board. The Aggies lost the total yardage battle 422-253 and gave up 29 first downs while recording 13 of their own. Utah State gave up a touchdown on a punt return. Special teams and poor offense doomed the Aggies as three USC scoring drives started at midfield or better.

The Aggies are a run oriented offense averaging a total of 390.5 yards of offense per game. Utah State is 112th in passing with 152 yards per contest while ranking 26th with 238.5 rushing yards a game. The Aggies score 26 points a game but they are allowing 26.5 points a night. Kent Myers is solid at quarterback. He has completed 36 of 54 passes for 304 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Myers adds 50 rushing yards. Devante Mays has a team leading 232 yards and three scores on 26 carries. Justen Hervey chips in 90 rushing yards and a score on seven carries while Tonny Lindsey has 84 yards and a score on 15 carries. Wyatt Houston (team high 65 yards, TD) and Rayshad Lewis (60 yards) each have seven receptions to lead the team.

Arkansas State has not inspired confidence in their first two games. The Red Wolves were uncompetitive in both contests, once at home and once on the road. Going out west likely isn’t favorable for Arkansas State either. Utah State was sharp at home in their opener before their drubbing at USC. The Aggies’ run game is top notch and I expect Mays to have a big day here. Utah State wins by double digits to cover the line and drop Arkansas State to 0-3.
