In what is billed as one of the best college football season openers in recent memory, the #3 ranked Florida State Seminoles will battle against the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide in a game that will shape the CFP landscape. Kickoff for this neutral site game will be 8 P.M. ET at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
The wait is over! The main event for Week 1 is here and it has everyone excited for the College Football season. It also has the experts wondering if these teams are going to be the best in the Nation or just pretenders this year.
Alabama is a perennial National Title contender and this year will be no different. The Crimson Tide look to roll over the Seminoles on their way to another College Football Playoff birth.
Florida State Seminoles have enough talent this season to contend with not only the Crimson Tide this week, but to also win the ACC Conference Title. However, a big win over Alabama could put Florida State in the driver’s seat for the top CFP spot.
The spread opened with Alabama as a 7 point favorite and has remained at that line. You might be able to find Florida State at +7.5 at a few books. The Over/Under opened at 53 points, but has come down to 49.5 total points.
This game can go one of two ways: Alabama crushes their opponent or it ends up being a close game with a lot of points on each side. The feeling is that this game will be a high scoring contest due to the talent both teams have on offense.
Alabama put up over 38 points per game last year behind one of the best offenses in the land. Although they are starting a quarterback who’s erratic as a passer, the talent in the backfield and the o-line will make this offense dangerous once again. Alabama is also replacing 3 out of 4 receiving targets, which will put more emphasis on the running game. However, once that rush attack gets going, and it will, the opportunities for play-action comes into play and you can bet Alabama will take full advantage of that.
Florida State features one of the best secondary units in college football. They also have an impressive front 7 that will put pressure on opposing quarterbacks, but can they hold up against mauling offensive lines like the one in Alabama? That is the question that will ultimately decide the game. If the Seminoles can limit Alabama’s run game, contain QB Hurts, and force the Crimson Tide into long passing downs, then they have a great chance at pulling off the upset.
Offensively, Florida State has to protect their quarterback, which seemed to be difficult at times last year. They are also replacing departed talent in the backfield and at the receiver position. Fortunately for the Seminoles, they have a great deal of young talent ready to take over. The success for this game, and their season, could solely rest on the arm of Deondre Francois and his playmaking abilities.
With all of that being said, look for the talent on both teams to shine throughout the game. We’ll see a bit of everything from offensive brilliance to defensive dominance. The stadium will be filled with both fanbases and it will be a playoff atmosphere. Expect the total points to hit the Over by time the game is finished.
The Over is 4-0-1 in Alabama’s last 5 games vs the ACC and 20-6-1 in their last 27 neutral site games. The Over has also gone 6-0 in Florida State’s last 6 neutral site games.
