NCAA Historical Final Four & Championship Game Betting Lines

I have gone back in history and dug up the scores from previous Final Four & NCAA Championship games. The information you will find in the tables below dates back to 1985, which is when the NCAA Tournament was expanded to 64 teams.

I was only able to find the lines for all Final Four games dating back to 2003. I was able to find all of the lines for the NCAA Championship Game since 1985. I’ll make a couple of notes about what I have found that will hopefully help you handicap not only this year’s Final Four, but the Final Four in years to come.

Missing Season

Unfortunately, there was no NCAA Tournament, and therefore no Final Four or Championship game, in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Oddsmakers generally expect close battles in the Final Four. However, 2024 and 2025 offered distinct betting profiles. While 2024 featured heavy double-digit favorites like UConn (-11.5) and Purdue (-9.5), 2025 saw a return to “Chalk City,” where all four No. 1 seeds reached the Final Four for the first time since 2008, resulting in much tighter lines across the board.

Favorites in the NCAA Championship Game have been a strong bet recently. In the last three years (2023–2025), the betting favorite has won straight up and covered the spread every time. This includes Florida’s narrow cover as 1.5-point favorites in 2025 and UConn’s dominant covers in 2023 and 2024.

There have been some massive upsets in the history of the NCAA Championship Game. The biggest remains UConn beating Duke 77-74 as 9.5-point underdogs back in 1999. Other legendary “dog” wins include Kansas (1988) and Villanova (1985), who both won as 8-point underdogs. More recently, Baylor’s 2021 destruction of undefeated Gonzaga stands out as a major upset, though they were only 4.5-point underdogs at tip-off.

Point spreads were often much wider in the 80s and 90s. From 1985 to 1999, there were four instances where a team was favored by at least 8 points, topped by Kentucky (-14) over Syracuse in 1996. While the “parity era” of the 2010s saw lines tighten significantly, the early 2020s have seen the return of dominant “power programs” resulting in spreads of 6 points or more in recent title games.

Oddsmakers generally expect close battles in the Final Four. However, 2025 was a rare year where “chalk” ruled the bracket, with all four #1 seeds reaching the Final Four for the first time since 2008. This led to tight spreads, with Florida covering as a slim 1.5-point favorite in both the semifinal and the national title game.

Favorites in the NCAA Championship Game have been a strong bet recently. In the last three years (2023–2025), the betting favorite has won straight up and covered the spread every time. This includes Florida’s two-point victory over Houston in 2025, where they managed to cover the narrow 1.5-point line.

While the “parity era” of the 2010s saw lines tighten, the 2020s have seen a return to more significant spreads when dominant teams like UConn reach the final stage.
