Each year, fans gather together to watch the best from the NFC battle the best from the AFC. The NFL playoffs draw some of the biggest fan bases and TV audiences of today. While each playoff game is exciting and fun for almost every fan of the game, the Super Bowl is the best of them all.
Fans from every team all over the league get together for this one special game. Fans spend all season hoping to have a chance of seeing their team make the historic run to the Super Bowl, and only dream that their team wins the game. While fans of some teams have been spoiled with multiple victories, others have had to suffer through gut wrenching losses, and few have never even had the chance of seeing their team play.
This year’s game matches the Denver Broncos against the Carolina Panthers. According to the latest odds in Las Vegas, the Panthers are 5-point favorites over the Broncos in this game.
The first Super Bowl was won by the Green Bay Packers in 1967, and the most recent by the Patriots in 2015. The NFC holds the overall edge by winning 26 Super Bowls compared to the AFC’s 23.
While each conference has had its shares of ups and downs, both conferences have led by seven games over the other at some point in history. Though the NFC won the first two, by Super Bowl XV the AFC held the edge of seven games over the NFC. Things quickly turned though as the NFC went on a tear, winning 15 of the next 16 before the Denver Broncos won back-to-back titles in the late 1990’s.
During that stretch, the NFC won thirteen straight times, with multiple victories coming from the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, and the Washington Redskins. The 49ers won a total of four during that stretch, while the Cowboys were close behind with three. The AFC’s longest winning streak is five games.
There have been three teams to go to the Super Bowl and never lose. They are the Baltimore Ravens (2-0), New York Jets (1-0), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0). The Ravens won three years ago for their second victory, while the Jets and Bucs have only been once each, but won both times.
On the flip side, nine teams have came up short each time they have reached the Super Bowl. The two most memorable teams are the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills, who are each 0-4 in Super Bowls. Buffalo fans had their hearts broken four straight years in the early 1990’s.
Fans of the Cowboys have been able to watch their team play a total of eight times in the big game. The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots have each made eight trips to the Super Bowl as well. Next in line is the Broncos with seven.
There have been four teams that have never made it to play on Super Bowl Sunday. They are the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions.
