Atlantic 10: 13-3
Conference Tournament: Richmond won the Atlantic 10 Tournament
Postseason: Lost in the Sweet 16

Chris Mooney guided Richmond to its second straight 20 win season and a spot in the Sweet 16. Four of last year’s starters have moved on, so many younger players will have the opportunity to step up and contribute.

The Spiders were 5th in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 69.6 points per game and first in defensive scoring with 61.2 points per game. Add that with having the 16th highest three-point shooting percentage and Richmond played well in many different aspects of the game. Mooney will preach the same defensive discipline to a new group of players.

2011-12 Preview

After the Spiders run to the Sweet 16 last year, they will have to replace their top three scorers. One of Richmond’s key strengths last year was their ability to protect the ball. Last year Richmond also had the 16th highest three-point shooting percentage in the nation with 54% of the team’s shots coming behind the line. The Spiders featured five players in the lineup that shot over 38% from beyond the arc. Additionally Richmond was one of the top teams in points per possession last season. Coach Chris Mooney will try to get the Spiders to play the same efficient game though the faces have changed with only one returning starter on the roster.

Backcourt

Darien Brothers is the only returning starter from last year’s team. He will provide the team with a scoring touch that they will be missing with the graduation of Harper, Anderson, and Dan Geriot their top three scorers from last year. Brothers started all by one game last year for Richmond and averaged 7.5 points per game.

Cedrick Lindsay will team up with Brothers in the backcourt after averaging 4.4 points a game in limited action. He shot well from the outside and is an above average defender.
Freshman Kendall Anthony who was runner-up for Mr. Basketball in Tennessee and Wayne Sparrow who was redshirted last season will provide depth behind Brothers and Lindsay.

Frontcourt

Francis-Cedric Martel is a top notch defender and showed that he could score last year despite limited touches. He ranked 82nd in the national last season in scoring efficiency.  He averaged 4.6 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game. Expect the scoring numbers to go up with the rebounds to stay about the same. Alonzo Nelson-Ododa is a freshman who is quick and athletic is expected to start at forward alongside Martel.

Darrius Garrett will start and is regarded as one of the Atlantic 10’s top defenders after being chosen to the preseason All-Defensive team. Last season he blocked 59 shots which lead the Spiders. Though he only averaged 1.9 points per game. He will need to play a larger offensive roll this year.

Derrick Williams will come off the bench and try to be efficient with his touches and work hard on the class. The Spiders will expect better production from him in 2012. Luke Piotrowski is a 6-11 center that will also challenge for playing time.
