Miami of Ohio Football Predictions

Last year the Miami (OH) RedHawks opened the season with a matchup against Ohio State.  The first quarter looked great with Miami out-gaining the Buckeyes 172 yard to 48, and they had a 3-0 lead.  Things went south from there, and Ohio State ended up crushing them with a 10-56 final score.

Miami picked up an easy win over Southern Illinois before moving on to face Boise State in week three.  The RedHawks were without their best receiver, Nick Harwell, in that road game.  They trailed 15-9 at the half, but ended up losing 39-12.

The RedHawks picked up expected wins against UMass and Akron before getting blown out on the road against Cincinnati.  They started the second half of the season the same way the opened the first half, this time suffering a blowout loss at the hands of Bowling Green.

Miami’s biggest win of the season came against then ranked #24 Ohio.  It was the first time the Bobcats had been ranked in the Top 25 for 44 years so a letdown game was expected.  The RedHawks followed that win by blowing a late lead against Buffalo, and they would not win another game.  Losses to Kent State, Central Michigan and Ball State gave Miami a 1-6 finish to the season and back-to-back records of 4-8 overall.

The RedHawks figure to be underdogs in their first four games of the season.  They will face Marshall, Kentucky and Illinois on the road, and they will be big underdogs in their home game against Cincinnati.  A 0-4 record in non-conference play seems very likely.

They open MAC play against Central Michigan, and home field advantage has given them a slight edge according to the preseason odds.  They are also favored on the road against UMass and at home against Akron in weeks six and seven.  I like the RedHawks chances of starting with a 3-0 record straight up and ATS in conference play.

The end of the season will be a lot more difficult with Miami playing on the road against Ohio, Kent State and Ball State.  Those are all teams expected to finish in the top half of the MAC standings.  They will face Bowling Green and Buffalo at home and figure to be touchdown underdogs or more in both of those games.

Season Predictions

The defensive line will have six starters returning from last years team.  It seems probable that the RedHawks will improve on their worst ever 34.9 points per game allowed in 2012.  However, Miami leads the MAC with 25 lettermen lost and their tough non-conference schedule may have these RedHawks players throwing in the towel early this season.  There is not a single matchup on the schedule that looks like a potential upset, so I am calling for Miami to win three games and finish fifth in the MAC East standings.
